You’ve come a long way when you set off from Luxembourg to travel the tracks of West Africa, heading for the Fondation Follereau’s many care units, far from the capital cities. The holes in the driving dirt tracks will make you discover new cervical muscles, but it doesn’t matter: the rich colours of the subtropical vegetation will fill you with wonder, and the people of the little village will be busy, carrying heavy loads with elegance. There are definitely more children here, and certainly more smiles and laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This life closer to nature, lighter and more serene in appearance, hides harsher realities. Every day, in places where life is extremely fragile, you have to fight the means of your own survival from nature. Life can be merciless in the absence of the resources we have in Luxembourg. This absence quickly becomes fatal. The slightest wound can lead to infection; there is no drinkable water, and diarrhoeal diseases claim victims among the smallest children. Suddenly, this initial image becomes less romantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation is moving into these less accessible areas because it knows how to make up for the lack of resources \/ how to overcome this fatality. Drinking water, infirmaries, maternity wards, good hygiene practices, screening for tropical diseases such as skin ulcers and leprosy. We’re still a long way from the blood tests and MRIs that our doctors prescribe to treat us, but it’s a first step: community healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foundation knows how to act effectively and ensure that people benefit from this service over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
